The Moro of the Story

A Bay Area food blog from a Bay Area Fauxdie (faux foodie)

While my brother was visiting me here in SF, I decided the best tour I know how to give him was a foodie tour!  After grabbing some dim sum at Great Eastern (my go-to dim sum place in Chinatown), I decided to go check if the famous Golden Gate Bakery was open today.  As awesome as GG Bakery is, it is also infamous for being closed many days as well.  When we first got there, we thought that it was also closed that day…but turns out, they were selling their famous egg tarts through the closed doors (weird…).  Oh well, 5 egg tarts please!

For 1.50 each, these delicious pieces of heavens are pretty pricey for egg tarts, but they are still worth it imo (especially compared to American treats out there like $4 cupcakes…which is coming up as well).  Love the flaky tarts, the hot-out-of-the-oven freshness, and the creamy sweet custard!

After the tarts, we wanted to go get cupcakes as well since my brother wanted to buy some for his friend back home (she loves cupcakes).  So we headed to the Marina at That Takes the Cake.  Lucky for us, there was a scoutmob deal for 2 free cupcakes (which I randomly realized after seeing the customers in front of me showing the app at the cashier). Along with our free cupcakes, my bro grabbed some more for his friend.  I ended up with the Fresh Banana cupcake for myself.  While it was moist with good banana flavor, I don’t remember it being a standout either. But I have to say +1, for the scoutmob deal, the nice atmosphere of the shop, and the friendly cashier!  Would come again!

Being the fatass that I am, while walking down the street from That Takes the Cake, Pacific Puffs caught my eye.  Being a sucker for custard desserts, I definitely had to try one of their cream puffs!  These puffs were pretty pricey at about $4 a pop.  Unfortunately,  these cream puffs were just average and were not too much different from the ones I can get at the French-Vietnamese bakeries (without the 4x price markup).  Sorry, all the non-Viet people out there are being ripped off by these “premium” cream puffs…
